Things to do in the Bay of Islands

In the Bay of Islands there’s so much to do – with outdoor adventure in forests, beaches, islands and rivers, fresh foods and wines galore, plus a tonne of history and culture all on the cards. Whether you’re going it alone, or as a couple, a group of friends or you’ve brought the whole family, when it comes to things to do in the Bay of Islands, you’re spoilt for choice.

Our must-do’s? Get airborne 100 storeys above the water, parasailing with Flying Kiwi Parasail – the views from that high up are simply out of this world. Channel your inner explorer by sailing a yacht around the hidden inlets, peninsulas and islands in the area – helping hoist the sails and learning about the area for passionate local hosts. Venture into a dark and ancient forest with us here at Adventure Puketi on a night walk, in a unique opportunity to see what comes out when night falls. The vineyards of the Bay of Islands are world class – those heat-loving varieties of grape turning out some amazing whites, syrah and cabernet/merlot blends. The Waitangi Mountain Bike Park beckons riders of all experiences with its beautifully contoured tracks – and its café. Check out some epic dining spots, the Bay of Islands delivers on the food front – try Alfresco’s, Bad Habits and the Tipsy Oyster. The Treaty Grounds are of course one of the biggest draw cards of the Bay of Islands, one of the most important stops you can make as a Kiwi. For more details on all these activities head over to our blog on Must-do activities in the Bay of Islands.

If you’ve brought the family, take your snorkels for a day out in the sheltered Otehei Bay, getting up close and personal with snapper and anenomes. Walk some easy tracks such as Puketi Night Walk or Haruru Falls. For something special take a scenic flight over the Bay of Islands. Get on your bikes and tackle a section of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail – we love the sections from Kaikohe down to Horeke, especially riding through the spooky tunnel. The vintage steam train is a real thrill to ride, as it huffs and puffs its way from Kawakawa to Taumarere Station. Fishing off the Opua Wharf is a classic, as is going for an icecream at Blue River Orchard or Cellini’s Gelataria and Espresso. Our blog on family-friendly activities in the Bay of Islands has all the details you’ll need.

But nature definitely rules in the beautiful Bay of Islands: whether it’s hopping aboard a sailboat for a wildlife cruise, swimming at one of the many beaches, spotting rare birds on Urupukapuka walking trails, exploring the creatures of the night in Puketi, make sure you get out and about in our beautiful natural environment.

We hope you enjoy exploring all the Bay of Islands has to offer – no matter your age, stage and interests!
